5-2-1-0 AZ Way To Go!

5-2-1-0 AZ Way To Go! is a nationally-recognized project and toolbox focused on dealing with the epidemic of childhood obesity. Developed by the AzAAP Childhood Obesity Committee, the program and its messaging for parents and their kids suggests the following: Eating 5 fruits and vegetables a day; limiting kids to 2 hours in front of the TV or other technology; 1 or more hours of physical activity per day; and a focus on reducing the consumption of sugary drinks to close to 0.

The Committee, comprised of AzAAP clinician members from diverse settings and specialties, created and distributed the 5-2-1-0 AZ Way To Go! Obesity Prevention toolbox in English and Spanish in 2009. It is also distributed to health professionals nationwide. The toolbox provides clinicians and school nurses creative ways to collaborate with and support families and the community to enjoy healthier lifestyles.

Knowing that this epidemic cannot be solved solely in the context of pediatric well care, the AzAAP Childhood Obesity Committee is eager to work in partnership with other health professionals in preventing, assessing and treating childhood obesity as well as to support groups that are doing their part in a variety of school, childcare, and other family-based community settings.
