Is YOUR Emergency Department prepared to provide the appropriate pediatric care to any critically injured child?

Arizona hospitals recently completed a pediatric readiness assessment to see how we compare with our peers. Seventy-five (75) of 76 Arizona hospitals responded to the assessment.

Arizona scored 72 out of 100, which is above the national average score of 70 by participating hospitals. While Arizona is on a par with the nation, we still have room to improve.

Key areas for improvement include: 1/3 of our hospitals don’t have pediatric-specific policies, 1/3 of our hospitals don’t weigh in kilograms (a medication safety issue), and 1/3 of or our hospitals don’t have interfacility transfer agreements to help rapidly move ill and badly injured children to the right place for care.
