Hearing & Vision Health

Beginning March 13, 2023, to become an Arizona Department of Health (ADHS) certified hearing or vision screener or trainer, training must be scheduled through and provided by the Arizona Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics (AzAAP). The purpose of this change is to support the equitable access to free evidence-based sensory screening training across Arizona.

Please see below for more information.

Hearing screening

To Become a Certified Hearing Screener:

Individuals can become a certified hearing screener for children enrolled in public, charter, accommodation, or private schools, including children and youth with special health care needs, in line with the requirements in the Hearing Screening Rules.

This is a FREE hearing screener certification for individuals who have never been certified or who were previously certified prior to March 2023. Moving forward, all new ADHS Hearing Screener certifications will remain valid for four years from the date of certification as outlined in the Hearing Screener Rules.

Screener eligibility:

  • 18+ years of age
  • High school or general equivalency diploma
  • Ability to recognize a student’s response to hearing range of tones at different pitches and volumes

To receive a first-time or renew an expired certification, hearing screening training is available on a group or individual basis. For those seeking training on an individual basis, a new hybrid training option is available, allowing individuals to complete the majority of the training independently at their own pace.

To complete the hybrid hearing screener training, register here.

  1.  Sign in or create a new account if needed.
  2. Watch all the lectures and read the supplemental information located in the online classroom.
  3. Take the open note test and pass with a score of 80% or higher. (Please Note: you will have two attempts to pass this test; after two unsuccessful attempts, you will need to re-register for the online course, watch/read all the lectures again, and re-take the test.)
  4. Schedule the hands-on competency portion of the training with your District Trainer. Please see the list of current certified District Trainers below. If your district does not have a trainer,  please reach out to sensory@azaap.org.

Schools/districts interested in group trainings are encouraged to contact sensory@azaap.org.

To Become a Certified Hearing Trainer:

Individuals may be qualified to become certified hearing trainers who will be authorized to train screeners. For more information:
